About the Program
The Envirothon is a hands-on environmental education program for teams of middle and high school students. During the entire school year, students study:
- Aquatic Ecology
- Current Environmental Issues
- Forestry
- Soils/Land Use
- Wildlife
In the spring, the teams compete against other schools in North Carolina in a regional and state competition by answering both written and hands-on questions about the aforementioned topics.
All Iredell County middle schools, high schools, and home schools are eligible and encouraged to participate in this yearly competition.
2019 Contest Information
The 2019 Area 8 Southern Piedmont Envirothon will be held on April 2, 2019 for middle school students, and April 3, 2019 for high school students at Horizons Unlimited in Salisbury, NC.
The NC State Envirothon will be held on May 3 & 4, 2019.
The top 7 teams and the highest scoring FFA team from both the middle and the high school teams from Area 8 advance to the North Carolina Envirothon held at Cedarock Park in Burlington, North Carolina. The high scoring high school team from the state competition advances to the National Competition where some of the prizes include scholarships.

Age Qualifications
Middle school teams may consist of students in 5th - 8th grades, and high school teams may consist of students in 9th - 12th grades.
